Beautiful Creatures: Book or Movie, or Both?

I remembered reading Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl several years ago, and was interested in re-reading the book when I heard it was being made into a movie.  If you like books about paranormal romance, Southern Gothic novels with a mystery - this book (and series, it is followed by three more books Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos, and Beautiful Redemption) may be the winter read for you!  Here is a summary of the book from

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

There are several noted actors in the cast of the movie, which opened on Valentine's Day.  On the Rotten Tomatoes website, reviews are decidedly mixed, from "A boring, proposterous mess" by Christopher Tookey (The Daily Mail, UK) to "A very enjoyable and welcome addition to the ever-popular supernatural teen romance genre and a worthy heir to the Twilight throne."  by Alex Zane, the Sun Online.  I am still debating on whether to go to see it, or stay home and watch my Downton Abbey episodes again!

  1. I saw it last night and I loved it! I haven't read the book yet, but it makes me want to because of the rest of the series. I recommend the movie and book.

  2. Thanks Christina! I hope to go see it soon.
